Matija Krečič

Violinist, composer, and arranger Matija Krečič completed his studies in violin (Prof. Fister) and composition (Prof. Stingl) at the Carinthian State Conservatory in Klagenfurt in 2015.

He actively collaborates with Magnifico, Tomaž Hostnik, and the ensemble Momento Cigano, and in the past has also worked with Terrafolk, Tango Story, Gal and Severa Gjurin, Mar Django, Skarabej, Orkestrada… He also performs with prominent jazz musicians and ensembles such as P’Jays, Marko Črnčec, and Žan Tetičkovič. He has written music for several short films and theatre productions (Puppet Theatre Maribor, Slovene National Theatre Drama Maribor). He is the author of the orchestral arrangements of Magnifico’s music for the film Montevideo, vidimo se! directed by Dragan Bjelogrlić. He created two musical identities for the first channel of TV Slovenia (2016, 2017–). At the Popevka Festival, he received the expert jury award for Best Arrangement twice (2018, 2023). His score for the feature film Inventory (Inventura) by Darko Sinko won the Vesna Award for Best Original Music at the 2021 Festival of Slovenian Film.

As an arranger, he is extremely active across a wide range of musical styles. Krečič’s compositional output encompasses solo, chamber, and orchestral works (both vocal and instrumental). So far, he has collaborated with numerous soloists and ensembles: Mate Bekavac, Bernarda Fink, Tanja Sonc, Jan Gričar, Davorin Mori, Ensemble Janus Atelier, MD7, Duo Furioso, Carpe Artem, Metabonma, Camerata Sinfonica Austria, Symphony Orchestra Cantabile, Ingenium Ensemble, APZ Tone Tomšič, Ljubljana Madrigalists… Two albums of his original music have been released to date: Architexture (Janus Atelier, 2014) and Cut / Rez (ZKP RTV Slovenia, 2020). In February 2020, the renowned violinist Daniel Hope presented Krečič’s composition In a Melting Pot in his programme Europe @ Home, together with Tanja Sonc and Marie-Sophie Hauzel. In 2022, he was selected as a composer for participation in the international project #synergy, held in the Western Balkan countries.

Matija Krečič is a member of the Slovenian Composers’ Society and co-founder of the Janus Atelier Music Society, which began its activities in June 2013. Since then, it has published nine sheet music editions and one CD. The society has organised two Janus Festivals featuring music from the past hundred years – in 2016 in cooperation with the Puppet Theatre Maribor, and in April 2024 in collaboration with the House of Culture Celje.
